Ready to take that leap and get your contractor's license for construction? Well read on and find out what experience requirements must be satisfied in order to even sit in on the California Contractors State License Board's exam.


In order to apply for a license you must have had at least 4 years of work experience within the last 10 years as a journey person, foreman, supervising employee, or contractor in the classification for which you are applying.

“Experience Certificates” that accompany your application must support your claims of experience. The Experience Certificate must be completed by a person who has direct knowledge of the work completed by the qualifying individual.

You may substitute a maximum of 3 years of experience with education, technical training, or apprenticeship training as it applies. At least one year must be actual job experience.
